back in my day

Linking up with Steph for this fun trip back in time :)

SMD's Blog

Nothing makes me feel old quite like my sister. Some days I forget how much older I am than she is, and other days it all comes flooding back. Her life is a lot different than mine, and not just because she had an awesome older sister to look up to. Here are some ways life was different back in my day:

  • I made mix tapes from the radio. DJs who talked through the beginnings/ends of songs made me CRAZY.
  • I remember the inception of the internet. My family actually had the internet sooner than a lot of people, since my dad worked at a university and got service through there. Dial-up. 14.4 kbps. A few years later it got bumped up to 28.8 kbps. BLAZING FAST.
  • Napster. Man, Napster was the shit. Who cares if we were stealing?
  • ICQ and Yahoo chat rooms. a/s/l??? :)
  • I wanted my own phone line something fierce. That dial-up internet was cramping my style.
  • Speaking of dial-up and land lines, I had dial-up internet when I first went to college, and I had a land line in my apartment all 4 years of college.
  • There was no such thing as wi-fi when I was in college. It didn't matter though, since I didn't get my first (and only) laptop until my second year of law school.
  • I didn't have a cell phone with unlimited texting until my senior year of college. In fact, I didn't have a cell phone that texted at all until my freshman year of college.
  • I remember back when student loan debt was seen as "good" debt. You know, before it started ruining the economy and people's lives.
  • I remember when you had to have a .edu email address to be on Facebook.
  • I remember before airbags in cars and when little kids could ride in the front seat. (Man, those were the days.)
  • Cable only had 22 channels, and if you wanted to record something, you set the VCR to record it. Hope you weren't planning on watching anything else at the same time!
Ok, that's enough. Most of it was technology-related, but what else would you expect? I'm 28, not 78. :) I can't wait to read everyone else's!!

  1. Seriously, I'd be yelling SHUT UP at the DJs. RUDE! I'm trying to make a mix tape!

We used to slide around the back seat of my grandparents' car! No seatbelts, no car seats.

    Thanks for linking up!

  2. hahahah YEP all of these. i remember my dad splurged on this fancy dual tape deck where you could press the record button and it would stay pressed until it heard the beginning of the other tape playing and start recording. that was fancy bidness. it even had autoflip so you didn't have to take the tape out to flip it yourself.

  3. Yes! And I remember when you had to get up to change the channel on the cable box. Thankfully remotes now allow me to be lazy. :)

  8. We had dial up and a landline all through college too. Waiting for it to connect was the worst. I think I still have that sound memorized. I found one of my old mix tapes from the radio a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it's all rap music. Haha! I wish I had a tape player to listen to it.

  9. Found you through the link up. :)

Ugh dial-up!! The worst was when my uncle showed my parents how to disconnect it by picking up and hanging up the phone multiple times in a row. Bane of my existence! The office where our computer was located was right next to the bathroom, so my parents would regularly get up in the night to pee and see the glowing light from the screen at 1 AM. If it was a weekend, I was online chatting on AOL until my mom threatened me with bodily injury.

And Napster - LOVED Napster. Everything was illegal and free and wonderful. ;) I was the first of my friends to have a CD burner so I was a hot commodity there for awhile!
